How To Become an EABecoming an Enrolled Agent is both a challenging and rewarding opportunity. Enrolled Agents are federally authorized tax practitioners who are admitted to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service. This important service aids taxpayers in their compliance with the tax laws and offers Enrolled Agents the opportunity to expand their business through representation. Enrolled Agents must first pass a two-day, four-part examination on Federal tax law, theory, and practice before the IRS known as the Special Enrollment Examination , or "SEE" Exam. The exam is currently offered only once per year, usually around September, and is proctored by the Internal Revenue Service. Candidates who pass the exam must then undergo a federal background check. Enrollment status is granted by the IRS to successful candidates, who are then allowed to practice. Preparation for the SEE exam can be by tax course or self study. Free publications may be ordered from the IRS to assist in self study. Courses for the SEE exam are also offered by several private businesses. Some practitioners offer courses in a class room setting where valuable interaction can occur.
